Coin splash, what is it? Thought came to me. How can you tell if something is struck through on a coin, or it is post strike damage? If an item is struck though inside the die, you won't see a splash or wave on the fields/devices. The dies will contain the metal movement from happening. So basically what you will see on the coin is what was struck though onto the coin. Wire, thread, foreign objects, cloth, fiber, string and on and on. So lets look at some of these: Fiber:
Plating ribbons:
Wire: (what is unique about these is that one end often is blunt and the other end may be tapered)
Button: Note the reverse shows no evidence of PSD, it looks normal like an error should look like.
Cloth:
Foreign objects:
Rim burr:
Thread:
 Splash or wave:
On the above examples, there was not wave/splash. What do you mean wave or splash? With the coin out of the striking process, the movement of contact moves the metal to a new location. when contact happens, it has to go somewhere. So contact will move the metal like a snowplow will more snow. Changing the normal flat fields pushed in one direction or another. This is how you can tell if it happened after the strike. On Machine Doubling you see the devices flattened in some areas and other areas you see it pushed up on the devices. Just like snow from a snowplow. So lets look at some metal movement: This wave or splash can be seen on disturbed normal devices. We often find examples of PSD in the coins we search. But they are all spendable. Now we will look at how to identify what happened to coins at the hands of coin murderers. Intentional damage: Reduced size of coins:
Hammered devices into the coin will make a wave away from the contact: On these, when they are hammered from one side making an incuse mark, the opposite side is showing a raised area opposite the damage.
Cut into coins to reduced the edges. (Why? Why not?)
Cut with blade:
Scratched with a ball point pen:
Magicians coins:
Altered coins/ counterfeit coins:

Nice compendium, but my fave is the struck-through button!

You probably wonder where did I get these images so fast to create this thread. I save posted images that I can use for such posts. Also I create new stuff from images on other sites online. Sometimes some will post an image and when I see it, I come up with others ways to use that image on a new thread. So many images do I have to choose from? My image site say right now, 8,967. Getting close to 9K images. So you may wonder, How did I get all these images on this thread and loose the information while loading? I use my word processor. I create the information, spell check it and add the image information with the script and re-check it. So how long did it take me to post it. One second. I copy/pasted it here on the forum. Save a lot more time on the forum. It probably took me a couple of hours to create the word page. But posting is a snap that way.

The tough thing about them if an upper one is wrong, then the other lower ones can be affected also.

coop, fantastic information and great pictures!
I can understand the struck through wire bristles, cloth, and threads. Button? Nail? Good grief, did the mint keep a random bucket of leftover hardware supplies handy and toss a bunch of it at the press when they were bored? that's crazy stuff!
