I am going to talk briefly about Die Deterioration Doubling today. I will also explain how you can tell the differences between Die Deterioration Doubling and a true Doubled Die. As you can see, this issue is caused by the die becoming very worn down from striking many planchets. The die will start slowly breaking down at first, then the devices eventually break down as well, with the devices becoming effected. Die Deterioration Doubling has a shadow effect and ghost like appearance to it. Die Deterioration can be very subtle or quite noticeable! The devices will look worn down, mushy, and have a stretched out look to it. There may also be die flow lines going outwards, as the die pounds away striking planchets. Remember, this is only caused by the die breaking down. A Doubled Die is a completely different thing that happens when there's a mistake in the die making process, causing the devices image to be doubled during the die hubbing process. From Mike Diamond:
Quote:A Doubled Die is caused by a misalignment or a mismatch between a working hub and a working die. The misalignment or mismatch occurs between a first and subsequent hubbing or sometimes in the course of a single hubbing. http://www.error-ref.com/doubled-dies/ I hope this helps. Tell me what you think. Is there anything I need to correct? Errers and Varietys.

Die wear is noticed on the sides of the devices towards the rim direction. The area on cents looks like Machine Doubling because it is on the opposite side of where you would find Die Deterioration.

WOW This is a great thread, at least for an error collecting beginner like me . Just to understand this error world !! IMO, it should be in some kind of "stickies" at the beginning of the forum. Just like any other "Tutorial" approved by mods. This way we could easily find and study those stickies !!
