Maybe I'm missing something but this looks like a pretty strong RPM and I don't see anything similar listed. Could it be an odd die crack/gouge/doofything? And of note, the first photo is of the first coin I found it on, all the rest are from a second coin I found it on in the same roll so it's not PMD.

Wow. You were certainly right when you said mint mark oddity. I'm no expert so don't take my word for it. It looks like a S mint mark maybe? Maybe the lower left curl of one? Or the corner of a D mint mark? Possibly even an oddly shaped Die gouge? Man! This one stumps me. Sorry but I think we should wait and see what others say. I am leaning toward RPM though. Good luck with this! Happy Hunting.

Not sure what that is, but it's very odd.

Doesn't look like an RPM to me either--my vote is for it being a die gouge.

If it weren't oval shaped I would think die gouge. I would send it to John Wexler and have him take a look. It may very well be a die gouge but most pics of die gouges as well as in hand are more erratic in shape.

It looks like it could match the shape of the bottom right curve of the mintmark, an overlay would be nice to see. I might be able to make one later today.

Overlay seems to line up to the highest points of the mintmark.

Hmm , food for thought though a serif would be a nice confirmation.

D/S is a stretch. Especially considering how rotated the S would have to be. The are no D/S coins that I know of that have the first mintmark severely rotated. The Mint wouldn't fixed a misplaced or misorientated mintmark with a completely different mintmark.

I feel it is more of a die crack issue. But you might send images th John Wexler and see what he thinks?

Starting to think this might be a good one to send in. As Coop notes it just looks too much like a D to easily say that it isn't. Not saying it is, because die gouges and the like can be pretty misleading, but... I'm getting a set ready to send to Mr. Wexler and will probably include this one just to get a final word on it. If it's a D/D then it's a good one, and if not, then I'm out a couple bucks and a bit more knowledgeable.

The only reason I suggested it was there known severely rotated mintmark dies for 1948 . This is 1948 S-ddo-002 .
