Hi, what grade would you give this 1863 Indian cent? Thank you!

Can't tell from the pictures.... Au 55 details or MS 60 deatils cleaned if the small scratches are on the coin.
Perhaps better if they're on the holder.

I would give this one an AU55, though I don't think it would holder at PCGS or NGC due to cleaning. Also the hit between two of the ribbons on the Obverse may take it back to an EF45 at ANACS
(edited to change XF to EF). See, I'm still learning :)

Hard to tell the AU/BU from the photo, but the cleaning is very apparent.

I don't think it has been whizzed. But I think a Brillo pad might have been used!

Yeah...a good indicator here is the darker finish near the edges of the portrait where the coin is protected from the abrasive. I'm sure it's no fun to get bad news like this...sorry.

Despite the comments about it being cleaned, it is a very nice piece to have in an Indian cent set. It doesn't need to be sent into a grading company for you to enjoy it. I would love to have my 63 looking that higher of a grade. Think about it- this coin has been around for 145 years and still looks that nice!

Thank you for your comments. I think I will send it back. I paid about $60 for it. In the description the seller wrote that the coin has not been cleaned.... And the pictures have not showned the scratches....

Maybe the seller does not consider blasting it with crushed walnut shells cleaning?

I was thinking only XF-45 with the harsh cleaning of the surface. I think in terms of the overall grade but the details are better.
