My best guess would be a rhodolite garnet. It's too reddish to be an amethyst, which is what I originally thought it probably was. Just my opinion though

If I might ask, where do you live that you can detect (and dig) in February?

We still have a month and a half to go here in Wisconsin before the ground begins to thaw.

Central VA. Our weather fluctuates so much, especially in the winter. (For example, we just got 4 inches of snow, but the high for later today is going to be 60+ degrees.) Honestly, you could probably detect year round if you really wanted to around here, the ground just might be a little hard for a few months, lol.
