Steamwalker Valued Member United States 201 Posts	Posted 08/09/2008 11:14 pm I was spending part of this evening practicing different ways to photograph coins and ended up with some pictures of my Morgan here. It's the only Morgan dollar I own and I bought it for just above melt at the local coin dealer for my type set. I am guessing something like an AU-55 for slight rub and some gauges? cabomhn Valued Member United States 202 Posts	Posted 08/10/2008 4:51 pm I would agree with the AU-55 grade given. The thing the mainly takes away IMO is the big cut on the neck and the series of small scratches to the left. Other than that it is a very nice coin. Report this Post to the Staff
Lew New Member United States 3 Posts	Posted 08/15/2008 10:05 pm I'm new here, and the question is serious: What prevents this coin from grading low-end UNC. It looks uncirculated to me (judging only from the photos) - what am I missing? Report this Post to the Staff

Bryan1315 Bedrock of the Community United States 14454 Posts	Posted 08/16/2008 12:22 am Quote: What prevents this coin from grading low-end UNC The flatness in the hair above the ear on the Obverse is usually either caused by wear or weak strike, it is one of the first places that will show wear, on the reverse the flatness of the eagles breast feathers are the same as the hear above the ear, it is one of the first places on a Morgan to show wear. If a coin has wear at all it can't be in the Uncirculated category, it has to be AU (Almost Uncirculated) or below Report this Post to the Staff

Maybe I'm missing it, but from these photos, and without the coin in hand, I think it would be a toss up on whether this is AU or MS. Anything just above melt is not a bad price.
