Ya, as you all can see I have several "nice" coins that have hairlines on them that I didn't realize they were there until I got more experienced. I thought it was just from being slid across the bar to pay for a shot of whiskey. Funny thing is you can't see them with the naked eye...the yellow spot is some toning on the reverse. You really can't see it in hand.

Thoughts about the grade on this bird?

It looks a lot like an NGC AU55 I have, where the tail is a weak strike.
I'll ignore whatever hairlines there might be, because than can only be properly evaluated in-hand.

This flyer looks like a cleaned mint state coin to me. In fact, it appears very similar to a raw 1857 that I purchased 10+ years ago. That coin was represented as MS-63 by the seller, but when I sent it to ANACS it came back as MS details, cleaned, net AU-55. It was a big disappointment!

My coin had well-struck tail feathers and few visible hairlines, but the luster was a bit dull. After I became a bit more experienced I was able to admit to myself that my treasure was in fact cleaned. I eventually sold it, losing about $60 plus the cost of the ANACS submission in the transaction. Live and learn!

Looks MS details to me.

I saw an 1856 last month that was uncirculated... but harshly cleaned

The signs of harsh cleaning shows up more when the coin is uncirculated.

Ya back almost 2 years ago when I bought it I thought it was MS62 or so. It was my third coin I ever bought... I think it still is a nice piece. I don't know what I could get for it, if I were to try to sell it. So many of these I see the breast feathers are so worn off, like Jaobler said, live and learn.
