Hi everyone,

I'm new to these forums and glad I've found them. I've been lurking around for some time and just decided to join up. I came across these forums because I too host a modified version of the Snitz code for a model railroading site. The site admin here also visits snitz, which is where I discovered this place.

I'll go ahead and embarass myself and try giving this one a grade. I'm hoping it'll be at least a VF-35 if not XF-40. What's the concensus here?

Welcome to the forum !

My estimate is VF-20 perhaps 25 in hand . the flat spots on the hair and flat cotton leaves with only minor seperation on the obverse , flat breast and very minimal feather visable on the head all are lower VF characteristics.

Rest in Peace

I would go a little better, maybe VF-30. A lot of detail but still somewhat worn. But that's just at first glance.

I'd say VF-25. Nice, natural coloring though.

Thanks, I learned a few things here.

I've been obtaining Morgans in the MS range for a while and I'll tell you that I've been pretty much spot on with what I believe the grades to be. Now that I'm filling out the collection and obtaining the more expensive pieces I've had to drop a few grades. I can't afford $1,000 coins at this point, maybe I never will. So dropping down into the VF, XF, AU range is something new to me and I still need to learn. Instead of determining amount of luster, clearness of the fields, etc, now I really need to figure out the wear and amount/intensity of scratches.

After reading the replies it sounds like this should get a VF-25 without a problem. I still think it could get a VF-30 but nothing higher, I think it would depend on the grader that day. What I've done is downloaded quite a few nice pics of Morgans in their PCGS holders and this is going to be very helpful.

Question: How much did the scratch under the eye affect the grading?

I paid $40 for the coin so I'm not dismayed, I knew it had to be at least a VF20. Can you believe the seller actually had this as a "Choice XF"?

In the VF grades the hit under the eye plays very little into the grade IMO, the coin is expected to have dings and a scratch or two .

I can believe the seller would call the coin EF that is expected to a certian degree and as long as you are able to discuss the grade with him and come to an understanding then its all good its when the seller will not discuss and and allow the buyer to place technical grading points on the coin that problems happen .

I used the PCGS grading standards as a technical reference and the ANA guide as a more liberal guide to estimate your coin .

Pictures can be decieving and grading from pictures will seldom come to hard and fast grade ,, you having the coin in hand are better equiped to come to a grade to actually label the coin .

40 bucks is a good price for this coin you did well on the purchase .

Welcome aboard, NYC!

I would go vf-20 on this one. Nice, original looking coin.
