Thinking about buying this one. It will be my first CC. Are those die cracks on the top of the reverse? What do you think it would grade? What would be a reasonably fair price for me to pay for this coin? Thanks!   Edited by MarkJ

those are die cracks and they are very common on morgans, as far as grade goes I would say maybe MS-60 maybe even 61 but I seem to grade my coins a little harshly according to what the TPG's are grading now days |

I'd say 62 possible 63. Bryan1315, impressive 7070  I've just started my next endeavor. Large Cents 7070. I've got the 1800 overdates, and recently picked up a nice 1795. I'm just sticking with lower grades to complete the set. I'll save the 1799 and 1794 "starred reverse" for last  . swcoin.ecrater.com

The obverse on this piece bothers me, anybody else notice the horizontal lines running across the cheek and into the fields? Without seeing the coin in hand, I would be worried it has been cleaned. 78-CC's come frosty (this ones not), and you can get an ms63 already in plastic for about $260.
I would pass and wait for a better example.

Thanks for the compliments on the photos hadleydog! I used one of those full spectrum floor lamps on high setting and my Wife's Panasonic Lumix 9mp Digital Point and Shoot in Macro mode. It has a nice Leica lens and I am very happy with the quality of photo it takes. The size you posted is still around 66% of full resolution. Is it the striae that tend to follow a common angle that gives away the cleaning? When a coin such as this that could potentially be a MS62+ has such markings does it make it completely worthless as far as numismatic value is concerned? I am heeding your advice on the purchase but the pull of the CC mint mark is strong. It's like an unseen force pulling my wallet out of my pocket!  Here is a crop at 100% but still jpeg compressed to about 70% quality as even the crop was about 1 megabyte so I fgured I should be kind to bandwidth here. Click on it to see the 100% scale.  |

I do not necessarily think that it has been cleaned but it does look like it has friction hairlines, possibly from being slid across a rough surface.

That's actually what I thought too, biokemist. Doesn't look cleaned. That being said, I'd also be careful to check for small traces of wear when you get the coin.

I have the coin. I was able to bring it home over the weekend to check it out before I make up my mind. It looks very nice. It does not have a mirror like finish in the fields like a couple other Morgans I own but it has very good eye appeal.

I do not necessarily think that it has been cleaned but it does look like it has friction hairlines, possibly from being slid across a rough surface.I thought about that too, and it would make sense for the marks found on portrait but the marks in the left field are in an area of low relief. Still, it could have happened. To have hairlines like this coin has is odd.  Regardless of how the hairlines got there, if I were to buy that coin the first thing I would see every time I looked at it would be that cheek. I've made that mistake before, and I've never learned to love a coin. I think a much nicer example could be found, they tend to come frosty with PL characteristics, and are worth looking for (which is half the fun). Have you considered buying one already slabbed or a different date in a gsa holder?

I am looking at various slabbed and GSA holder coins of this year and mint. mostly on ebay. They run the gamut of pricing and some are really expensive! This will be my first CC and it is local with no shipping or other risks involved. I think I am going to offer him $100.00 for it. Based on what I have seen on ebay, read about it in the Red Book and other publications, I should always be able to get that much for it, possibly more if the time comes to "upgrade" it to a better or graded coin. I may even send it in to PCGS or ANACS and have it graded. I now have 24 Morgans (3 or 4 years I have duplicates) most of them purchased from this individual. They are very nice examples most of which I paid a little over melt. This will make 25. I am getting closer to a full set which is my goal. Currently my goal is non-mint specific but that CC is a mighty strong force to be reckoned with! Help! I've been bitten by the Morgan bug! I appreciate all your help and warnings. One last question. This coin is obviously worth something. I want to be fair with the guy but at the same time I want to be fair to myself. Do you think it is worth $100.00? Is that a fair offer to him? |

Thanks again hadleydog! I searched through Heritage auction site and found that exact coin. I looked at the larger photos both obverse and reverse. The coin I have in my hand is much nicer that this one. I am even going over it with my microscope. It looks like it has not been cleaned. But as you say it certainly has come into contact with something with a rough surface.
I think I will make an offer of $100.00 I feel it is worth at least that much. He is asking $200 and thinks it is worth $250. Maybe so, maybe not. I am comfortable with $100.00 possibly even $125.00. It will be the most I have ever spent on a single Morgan to date.
If he accepts the offer I will have it rated and report back.
Your advice and expertise is most appreciated. I thank all who responded as your opinions also helped me tremendously.
