That tombac '42 nickel was always one of my favorites. Not sure why but I always had an affinity for the REV of the Canadian nickel with beaver on mound. Hope no one minds the bit of nostalgia this post brought back to me:
I actually did some beaver trapping years ago in a reservoir to help curb the mounting cases of giardia ('beaver fever") in a small town. It gave me an even better appreciation for this coin b/c when I see it, I remember thinking over the design while standing on an absolutely HUGE beaver lodge with attached 300-350 yard long dam (that I also walked the length of!). The engineering skills God endowed these creatures with is stunning when experienced in such close detail and first hand.
Now every time I see this cool nickel design its a fun trip back of those days gone by.
BTW that huge lodge yielded up a 27, 35, 42 (of course) and a 53 pounder! Over 50 pounds is unheard of in modern times. Of course the beaver were not totally eradicated (impossible and I would not do it anyway!). But thankfully removal of these was a help to local health.
