Hey there diggers! Another successful mission on getting out and digging up some great old coin finds. Back on the site from last time and some finds from a new site...and the last finds from a great old site that I haven't been to in years. Here's the breakdown..first site produced a 1859 Canada large cent and a Genuine British Copper half penny token of Nova Scotia...new site squeaked out a USA Hard Times token of 1837, a French cinq centimes of 1864, a PEI token ( Speed the Plough)and finally a Victoria Nobis Est token. And not to be outdone...swung by a old site that been ploughed and planted several times since the last visit netted me a UK bank token..big ole 3 shillings silver! Great first for me on this one! Now the nice weather is here it's been a blast getting out digging again...see you next time!

Great finds Ironhorse! I'm a bit surprised by the hard times token. Any idea why it might have made it to Canada (other than just random chance)?

to Jadey ....where I live (Atlantic Canada) we have always had a strong trade relationship with the American north east since forever, being basically the right size it probably passed as a half penny I've found coins from all parts of the world which to me indicates that there was pretty good global trade even a couple of hundred years ago so coins half penny and penny sized we used Even all along the shared border with Canada and the States you'll notice a mix of both countries coins being found...even today, here in Canada, no one would question a US coin or bill in the mix, just accept it and carry on with the transaction..I know it is not reciprocated in the US...our money is not generally accepted...period lol

Great Finds Ironhorse! What part of the Maritimes are you from? I'm from New Brunswick and am just starting to do a little searching for the first time!

There is a major amusement park here named Cedar Point. It used to be that they accepted Canadian money at face value, don't know if they still do. I know local banks would discount it a little, but not as much as most other places in the USA. I'll have to look into that. I find Canadian coins all the time in circulation.

to joecoin... Being relatively close to our border, it doesn't surprise me to hear that, cross border shopping/ travel is quite prevalent and the border states would no doubt have the most impact on what you may see from up north Once you get a state or two deep away from Canada, I would expect the frequency of finding and acceptance dwindling equally, most folks wouldn't quibble over a few cents in their change anyway so it goes on

I grew up in Massachusetts, so not super close to the border. But it wasn't uncommon to see Canadian coins. And there was never any hesitation to use or accept a few during transactions.
