While occasionally working the retail parts counter at Mercedes-Benz of Tampa, I opened the cash drawer on a regular basis for customers asking me to break a $20 so they could leave a tip for the in-house barista. Close to 90% of parts sales were paid for by credit/debit card.

Personally, I carry cash but seldom use it, and since the advent of Sun Pass for toll roads, I no longer have a stash of coins in the car. Nothing against physical coinage or paper money, just a matter of convenience. I haven't left my house with coins in my pocket in decades.

Also, if the economy ever goes cashless, as jbuck suggests it might, the bartering system will prevail wherever it is...needed...and new forms of untraceable currency will likely emerge and/or people will dig into their PM stashes. Sci-fi movies have taught us this.

I'd bet 500 quatloos on it.

Well...only three Gamesters can trace those anyway.

Although it may ultimately prove wrong, I find it very difficult to imagine the farmer in bib overalls, when I go to pay him for his old bench vice to say, "Yup...20.00...Will that be Visa, Discover, Paypal?"

What he might say though is "do you do Venmo"? All the cool farmers are using it now...

I do agree it will take awhile before cash goes away but I do find myself using cash, writing checks, etc. less and less as technology continues to progress.

We still have barter now. We will always have barter.

And baby sitters. I have not given the baby sitter cash in a long time now.
