For instance, we sold 500 Ike dollars in individual auctions last month. Do you really think I should pay someone to take a photo, upload, catalog and list every individual Ike dollar?

In this instance you're really asking the wrong question. Try: Should I really list 500 Ike dollars on ebay when I could be offering a better collector experience by taking photos of the quality items I'm actually trying to sell for a profit rather than as a marketing gimmick?

Or how about: Should I really use Ike dollars as a loss leader in casting about for the cheapest collectors on ebay, who naturally won't be as happy about having to pay a fair price for an item AND get slow shipping?

You bring it all on yourself...

Here are the numbers from one of my favorite sellers on ebay:

http://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISA...myworld=true

They have similar sales numbers to Mike's Coins, but have much better customer satifaction. They take pictures of all their coins. They have always delivered within 7 days. They offer extremely generous shipping rates that include insurance. Sellers like this are setting the bar high on ebay.

I respect lavanga for stepping up and taking criticism on the forum, but it seems like he is simply unwilling to raise his standards in a competitive market.

All the Ike dollars shipped out the day they were paid for. Some got lost in the mail (according to the customer) and had to be reshipped. That was the only cause for shipping delays on those.

I don't really have a problem with somebody not taking a picture of a coin that they say is Uncirculated ... as long as the coin is delivered to the buyer in Uncirculated condition.

The problem with this business model though is that ebay buyers are always looking for something for nothing and are eager to leave NFB.

This is why I think it's a good idea to photograph each coin.

I wish Mike the best of luck but I don't think his model can work on ebay. Mike hasn't given info on whether he got a 30 day restirction, or a permanent restriction.

I would suggest for Mike to take some time off and just rethink his strategy.

Selling on other accounts is only going to work for so long. If you get the same feedback on those accounts that MikesCoins1 got eventually those accounts will be restricted too.

Gibson, we currently have NO restriction put on the account. Initially, it appeared we did and ebay took down all the auctions, then they recalculated the numbers and found that since only a handful of people made all the complaints they reinstated all of the auctions and credited all my fees.

This would be the fifth time on two different user IDs that they took all the listings down, and then said they goofed and offered immediate reinstatement. This whole discussion was centered around my guilt when if you read the original email I sent to the list that nothing was wrong until I had one fraudulent buyer and numerous misaplied policies as a result that causes a lot of problems.

I don't want to list anything on Mikescoins1 as when all of the BS was going on with the Paypal holds, etc., we didn't WANT to list anything on there, as I discussed in my email to my mailing list we had raised search standing on both of our other user IDs and all DSRs above 4.7 and would rather list on there as a result.

Eventually we will probably list on Mikescoins1.

Mike,

If you don't remember me, my name is Addie I purchased a roll of 1880o Morgans from you. You sent me (19) 1880o's and (1) 1880s. Do you remember. I had to file a complaint with pay-pal and lets say you got angry. Do you remember that you were going to sue me, that your wife is an attorney.
Mike you said something in my feedback that just are not true. You always blame someone else (like the Post Office). All I wanted was for you to just send me what I paid $600.00 for. I just wanted you to know that the coins you sent me have been cleaned, and are not what you said. But my lost your gain. I want you to also know that I am a Detective and I investigate FRAUD case like some of the one I have read about in your feedback. Mike I want you to know that every time you received a bad feedback I contacted that person and asked if they filed a complaint with ebay. I know see that they did.

But know that I have read some of the ideas from this posting I do hope you get your act together. All anyone is asking is to be honest. Don't sell it if you don't have it. It took me 2 months to get my coins, it took you 10 min. to get your money.
Good luck Mike I hope you get your act together. Listen to everyone in this posting and it will work out.
Rest in Peace

There are two basic marketing strategies.

Taking care of business - The motto of the late Elvis Presley, it means exactly what you think it means. Your work product is a profit and a satisfied customer.

There's a sucker born every minute - A description of P. T. Barnum's business practices uttered by David Hannum in reference to Barnum's Cardiff Giant hoax was attributed to Barnum by a competitor with the real hoax. Your work product is the unloading of a dubious item to a gullible customer without expectation of future business, for profit regardless of the customer out-look.

There may be shades of gray in betwixt, but.....

I am not involved in this situation and can offer no defense for Mike but I have to react with a sense of incredulity at the people that weren't even members of these forums who create an account for no other reason than to post disparaging comments in this thread.

Steamwalker

I am sorry that you feel the way you do. Yes I opened an account so that I can have my say with Mike. You see he has blocked many of us from sending him
e-mails. Maybe if were ripped off of $600.00 then maybe you would understand my point and the others who opened an account. Also I have said my piece and I hope Mike gets his stuff together.

Steamwalker, I have to respectfully disagree with the idea that people are only posting to disparage. It seems to me they are passionate and looking for a chance to explain, warn, and yes, maybe to vent a little. But I know from experience that when you get ripped off, you get angry, so it shouldn't surprise anyone that people want to tell their side of the story in the hopes that at least maybe others can benefit from their horrible experience.

Besides, it's not like Mike has been posting on other topics of numismatic interest on this site, nor has he shown any interest in taking the suggestions of experienced numismatists. My money is on the disgruntled people having logic as well as emotion on their side.

My comments weren't meant to criticize those who are speaking out but rather to voice my question of where they are coming from. For instance, if I bought something from mikescoins1 six months or a year ago, I don't know how I'd find a thread on a message board that I am not a member of or frequent sometime later about this very same seller. I certainly wouldn't be googling the seller's name repeatedly after the sale to see if I could find a thread on a message board about him so I can add my Two Cents. My question is not why, but how. (I hope that isn't as confusing to read as it was for me to type)

It's human nature to want to know if you're alone. That's why they Google it, not necessarily to add comments. Although it just so happens that this place makes it easy to be posting in minutes.

If you look on Google, rip-off report is #1 and this topic is #2.

After being screwed by a seller more than a year ago, I am still checking his listings and reporting them to ebay as well as looking at other places online like this one to add my 2 cents to any discussions involving him (I've discussed him elsewhere on this site, so I won't bother to rename him). These injustices hurt the heart more than the wallet, and the heart holds on long after the money is forgotten...

Yes. The FBI was interested in my documentation of my rip-off by a certain ebay seller from Savannah, Georgia.

Such things take a loooooooong time, I've still got my ear to the ground.
