Mary I as sole ruler 1553-54. Undated groat (I see @paddy also posted one of these back on the first page). Took a gamble on the scratches, and they are less noticeable in hand than in photo.

Quote: Any idea why no rulers ever appeared on the Angels? I don't know the answer, but would observe that a number of other contemporary gold coins (circa 1500) also lacked a ruler's portrait: Italian florins, the French ecu, the Brabant florin. Though I agree that generally speaking portraits were more common on English coins than either of these other places.

Thanks all!
t360, yes, it's a challenge to find ones that are nice and round - particularly later ones - I think quality control rather went out the window as the political situation worsened! Those are of course, a selected handful! I have others, but not perhaps quite as pleasing to my eye. Another time for those perhaps. :)

Wish I had an Angel or a Noble, but this'll do for my budget. Edward VI half sovereign.

Just squeaking in the 2 Willies 1696 Tower Mint 1696 Exeter - No date, but datable through small harp. I am assuming Commonwealth/Cromwell not allowed here?
