Hello everyone , I have spent hours on these forums looking at old Roman coins and using the information to help identify mine. Mostly I have been buying my own sets to clean and small old lots on ebay. I'm interested now in buying a gold Nero aureus. The condition is worn but it is in my price range. My only question would be why the seller says it weighs 6.8 grams when I think it should be 7.2 grams. Am I missing something here ? Please check out the listing and let me know what you think. I have already messaged the seller to ask him to weigh it again to see if it was an error on his part. Thanks Here is the listing https://www.ebay.com/itm/Ancient-Ro...422f%7Ciid:1

to the community The price seems to be within reason of a coin in this condition, however I would not take a chance spending that much money on a seller with only 28 sales. You would be better off buying from better well know sellers such as Vcoins. Here are some similar coin listed there, they are expensive though. https://www.vcoins.com/en/Search.as...signed=False

The pics are severely lacking, as well, for a coin that pricey.

Why would you spend 2k on a coin from a total unknown seller, with no warranty and very poor photos, when you have same coin, selled by Savoca (one of the biggest and most prestigious European numismatics) at same price and better condition?. I think that is an unnecesary risk :( https://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/sa...Default.aspxIf you cannot authenticate a coin with your knowledges, buy it to a well reputated proffesional and let him authenticate it.

I would absolutely not pull the trigger on this coin. Bad pictures and lack of details about the coin and its history would give me great pause. Go to vcoins like others have said or find a legitimate coin shop near you so you can see and feel the coin up close and personal.

Odds are about 50/50 that it's genuine Gold coins do not get a lot of 'use' and are generally found in VF+ or better condition as they spend 99.9% of their lives buried away in a safe place When in doubt ....... punt !

The description concerns me - solid 22k gold, only 700 minted? Very odd thing to put in the description. Makes me think it is so that they can claim they were forward about it being a reproduction.

Hello again everyone,
Thank you for your insight into this coin. I've spoken with the seller several times now about the concerns everyone raised. He seems nice and offered me a return policy if I didn't like it and also re weighed the coin. It's still 6.8 grams so that still troubles me. He also sent some more pictures and while I don't see anything myself that makes it really stand out as a fake some of the other coins you guys showed me are in much better condition and almost the same price. I have decided to pass on this one and and keep looking at the other ones. I'll let you guys know on what one I ultimately decide.
Thanks for everyone's input!

@rc, first welcome to CCF. I'm really glad to see this thread develop and you ultimately follow our direction. I'm looking forward to seeing you post your first Aureus here too!
