orfew Pillar of the Community Canada 1269 Posts	Posted 05/27/2019 12:54 am I have been on a ship in the Atlantic ocean for the last 7 days so I have not posted in a little while. I placed an absentee bid on a rare coin of Domitian and when we were in port on Tuesday I found out I had won it. It is in rough shape but one cannot be too choosy if one wants to have an example. What makes it rare is the inclusion of "PONT" in the obverse legend. Roman empire - Domitian (81-96 AD.) silver denarius (2.87 g 18 mm). Rome. 81 AD Obv: IMP CAES DOMITANVS AVG PONT, laureate head right Rev: TR P COS VII DES VIII P P, seat, draped, above, a winged thunderbolt placed horizontally. RIC II 40. These pulvinaria are the seats of the gods. In the case of this coin it is an altar with a flame. As for the thunderbolt I believe it is an attribute of Jupiter but that is not on my coin. A few of us who are interested in this topic have been discussing the meaning of this series recently. There are still no absolute conclusions and much more research is necessary.
