Hi all, I am brand new to the world of ancients, no idea how to spot real from fake. I know about "slabs" from my US coin endeavor, but right now I just want a few nice big lots to sort through and learn about. What about something like this -

Do those look real? It's so overwhelming to learn how to spot. Anyway many thanks, opinions appreciated.

Looks like a mixed lot of some good coins and some questionable. The first seven coins are Roman with one Roman Republic coin and the rest late roman empire. The square coin is Baktrain and is Apollodous. There are two medieval coins and the rest I'm not sure if they are genuine or not.

Not the worst lot, but personally I wouldn't bid much higher on that one. Most of the coins are very low grade, and all of them have problems. The Republican denarius is nice, and it has an Honorius siliqua which is special - these small silvers of the late Roman empire are quite scarce. IMO, neither of these carry the lot, however. It is exceptionally mixed, though. I spot Greek, Celtic, Roman republican, Roman Imperial, Indo-Greek, Carthaginian, medieval, and the coin at the bottom right is from 19th century Cambodia:

Ironically, that may well be the most valuable coin of the whole lot!

I don't see any that are obvious fakes.

At the 'current' 81 euros I would pass on it without a second thought
If you want to drop $100 you could do much better
Patience can be a difficult thing to keep
But if you "lowball" enough group lots you will land one in good time
Keep an eye out for someone unloading a group of Gallic Empire 'ants'
(Postumus Victorinus Tetricus)
You can sometimes 'scoop' a group of them for around $7 each in near VF

Thank you guys, you are amazing! To know the deep history of far off coins is so broad & vast an endeavor compared to the nice simple set of US mintage.

I do indeed want to drop $100 on a nice lot, but they don't seem to exist .. I know, "patience" :) Thanks again!

Tim;

I think one might work backwards and start again by asking you, what ancient history do you like the best? Like most people know the history of civilization from Alexander the Great on a bit and admire eras more than others. That lot you looked at was extremely varied and if you end up being fascinated by just Imperial Rome, you'd end up with so many extra coins you never were interested in and might have spent quite a bit before you felt your calling to a certain period or region. I remember a man who was into American coins his whole life started out into ancients just grabbing everything. Soon he realized this was not a feasible plan so he thought of what he was interested in and just said, "what if I just look for coins with Hercules?" He did and ended up selling a very nice collection with almost every coin that had Hercules on it. Later on he did a lot with Medusa. But it interested him and he actually could achieve the plan. I know a man with a name similar to Kebren and convinced himself he was descended from there so he buys every Kebren Ram coin with the "K" visible to give to family members. Others who just collect coins with grapes. So if you have a Greek specialty in mythology that is a great start as I often think the ancients used these stories as a civilization reference that they knew everyone knew to make points in conversation and many coins have these legends depicted. Or on the flip side, if your wife is upset you are spending on a new hobby but she likes dogs, just get ancient coins with dogs for "her". So what are your interests to the point where if someone said spend a year memorizing timeline of all history including China and you'd quickly be asleep as opposed to someone saying study the Spartans and you'd have a huge burst of energy you would be so interested potentially...
