Hi to Everyone,
I have come across a number of coins, from Pennies, Nickels, Dimes and Quarters, that seem to be coated in a Dark Purple color (see attached). What is the reason for this? Does this degrade the value of the coin (this being a 1941 S Nickel)?

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

That's ED (environmental damage). Probably lived in the ground for a while. Still worth 5 cents!

That's the sm. S variety. Even without the color & corrosion, it's worth less than a buck.

Yes I think so, although the circulation wear has more of an effect.
