I'm going to be in Italy later this year and I'm curious to see if I'll be near any coin stores. First off, I'm having a hard time trying to look up coin shops in Italy online since there are friggin' department stores that are popular there called COIN!

Anyone know how I can search for stores in Rome/Venice/Florence?

I also realize that getting a bargain might be very difficult since from what I've found in the past when accidently bumping into a coin shop in Switzerland that the prices can be quite aggressive.

The ebay filters are of no use, as they only go up to 2000

miles of your location. We've members in Italy, maybe they'll see this.

Good luck!

I visited a coin shop in Venice in October 2016. I found it quite by chance, near St Mark's Square. I bought some recent uncirculated commemorative 2-euro coins from Eastern European countries like Latvia and Lithuania, and they were good value. I think they had older coins from a range of countries, but I didn't really have time to browse!

When walking from the Piazza S. Croce in Florence to the Cathedral, I remember passing a professional looking coin shop, with various coins in the window ranging from Roman to modern Italian year sets, but that was about 20 years ago so it may not be there any more!

Rome is certain to have coin shops, although I have no recollection of seeing one there on my last visit in 2016, other than a coin and stamp shop just outside the Vatican where the main items on display were recent Vatican euro sets.

@NumisBob

I was in Venice in April 2018 and that coin shop was still there. If I remember correctly they had a few coins in a window display but I didn't stop inside and look around.

Hi Prethen. Well, first it would help to learn a few basic words of Italian. You're not going to find much searching for "coin."

Rare coins - monete rare
Numismatic - numismatica
Numismatic coins - monete numismatiche
Rome, Venice, Florence - Roma, Venezia, Firenze

Coin dealers - commercianti di monete

Search using "commercianti di monete Firenze" and you will find some coin dealers, etc.

Buona fortuna!

PS You could also learn some Italian free (it's not hard) using Duolingo.com.

Kind regards,

George

George, thank you for that very informative post. I kind of knew that I was not going down the best track by searching for "coin" dealers in Italy. I was hoping that someone would chime in with the proper phrasing I should be looking for. Thanks for that! I have Rick Steves book for Italian (and French/German) phrases and I've been going through that to try to get the hang of some polite words/phrases to know for my trip. I've also seen some decent online clips (probably some from duolingo) to help me along.

Why not try hobby stores or places?
