Hello gentlemen I stumbled across this 1916 penny and to me it is hard to tell what is going on ibthought mabe some kind of acid but the finer lines say like on the letters are still pretty crisp and the rim on the bottom edge has a little something going on also any input knowledge or opinion would be great

Not sure what happened to it,but it is not a mint error. Pics of reverse? Usually acid eats the rims, rim looks ok. Heated?

Looks like the obverse was exposed (obverse down) to some corrosive material...this is classified as environmental damage.

I agree not heat damage because the reverse isn't showing the same damage. My vote is for acid, but not immersion, but rather just enough to cover the obverse inside the rim.
