Woo hoo I found 9 of them in one roll , all have a large P above Monticello ...cool , the rest of the roll was "just" buffalo's , my favorite coin.
There must be others I was unaware were silver in my folder for the war years , has the nickel ever been silver at any other time ?

Nope, the only silver pieces were during the war years.
That is why the large mint mark over Monticello's dome.
Story is that the gov ernment planned to recall these after the war & melt them down.
That was never done, of course, but still a fun story.

mfhorn,

The bank is First Federal in Kentucky. Unfortunately the sign for free coin counting was down last time I went and they charged me, but it wasn't that much. I will head there in a bit to see if it's free again lol.

hemi:
I would suggest picking up a copy of the Guide Book of US coins, by RS yeoman, edited by Ken Bressett.

It will fill you in on popular varieties, and better dates.
