Wonder why the Mint didn't consider making the Proof 2009 cent exactly like the 1909 VDB? Think about it...a Proof 2009 cent with the VDB on the bottom of the reverse with the Wheat Stalks and the most impressive thing would be that it would be from the San Francisco Mint so it'd be a 2009 S VDB Proof cent! What away to commemorate the 100th year anniversary...it'd be a collector's frenzy!

I agree that would be something but I'm very excited for the designs they have planned.

People are complaining about all the items that the mint produces as it is.
So, small chance for another.

Collectors have been suggesting that since at least 2003, and I'm sure the mint thought about it as well, but the mint does not make the design decisions. The 2005 authorizing legislation mandated the design concepts and that was what the Mint then had to work with. It does require the original 1909 Brenner obv but not the original reverse, and the Mint can't just create a 2009 SVDB just because the collectors want one. (One interesting thing, if they follow the law they will have to remove Brenners initials from the obv since they did not appear on the original design.)

I'd really like to see the collector coins with a least some relief to Lincoln's bust, which has been slowly whittled down over the years. Take the time to strike them well (in bronze), and charge collectors for it. I'm not too enthused by the commemorative reverses...they look amateurish.

Kurt, I have to agree with you, if they want to make them special then change the material. Bronze would be awesome but I would even settle with copper. They make silver proof sets but they never do anything special for the cent. When it comes to proof/mint sets most of the people that buy them are collectors and they want a very unique coin that they can not get from circulation if this was not the case then there would be no use for the sets in the first place.

I really like the thought of a 2009 S VDB wheatie! How beautiful that would be!

Have they set a release schedule for the new cents?

It just occurred to me how BIG the 2009 proof set is going to be.... With the usual dime, nickle, and half plus 4 Prez dollars, 6 U.S. territory quarters and 4 new cent designs too!

I heard Lincoln's birthday in February is when the 1st new design will be released.

bmanofnbc, you forgot the sac dollar. Total 18 coins. 22 coins if they include both the bronze and the copper plated zinc versions. I'm thinking more though that they will put the Zincolns in the regular proof set and the bronze ones in the silver proof set.

That makes too much sense. They could make a killing off that. Also, only mint 484,000 of them!
