I started to collect coins as a kid back in the early 80's. But since then I've always kept an eye out for stuff to pull from change. I used to get rolls of 1/2 dollars from the banks and search them, though that is getting near impossible (unless I can talk the wife into letting me buy a box LOL).

To start myself off again, I tried a box of $25 in pennies. Although I wasn't particularly successfull getting wheaties, I did get a few nice XF-AU's for my album that I started in the 90's and haven't done much with.

Needless to say, I'm hooked again. Even with only getting 4 wheat's, I was excited all the way through. Even the newer cents I looked at, just in case one was a proof. In my opinion, roll searching and getting stuff in pocket change is the best way to collect modern coins. I know I value the coins more than if I went and bought something. Honestly, I've never planned on making money on coin collecting. Someday my kids will get them, and hopefully they'll stay in the family forever.

Anyways, here is my dismal list of finds:
9/5/08
$25 (50 rolls)

1941
1944
1946
1956D (Beat up)

1999D Dime

Canadian
1962
1963
1964
1965
(2) 1969
1973

Well, if nothing else, I made "9 cents" LOL

Kinda funny update, I went to get the box that the bank gave me to carry the cents in (it wasn't a normal $25 cent box) and there was 1 more roll! I was excited.. always want just one more to search HAHA

Got a 51D wheat from it.. that brings me up to 5 total for a ratio of 1 per 10 rolls.

I took my 10 rolls of 82 and up pennies back to the bank and they bought them thanking they where nickels wraped up. There mistake my gain. And they also sold me a nice 64 silver half dollar for 50 cents.

I actually did keep several 60-79 cents that were in XF+ condition. I figured if I suddenly started saving rolls of pennies and demanding more money from the wife, she'd have even more problems seeing the point of my roll searching. I'll make rolls when I get enough of a date/MM to make a roll. I know that they will be worth 2 cents for years to come.. but maybe, just maybe 50 years from now on of the grandkids/great-grandkids will look at them and get an itch for coin collecting.

Plus Zinc pennies are my least favorite of any US coin. The only time they are nice is when you see a well struck MS coin. The ones that are polished and almost proof-like. But then you realize that unless they are kept in an air-tight container, they will look like as they deteriate.

I'm not sure what would have been the best plan back in 82 as a replacement for the copper cent, but IMHO, the zinc cent was not it. I'd just assume that they stopped minting the cent all together (or if they did for mint cents and proofs on copper).

To Coindexter:
Just so you'll know-- if as you say the teller gave you $20 thinking they were nickels (or thanking as you say)instead of $5 in pennies then the teller who makes minimum wage or a little more had to make up the $15 difference her drawer came up short.
Honesty and integrity are worth much more than $15. Just my opinion.
I believe what goes around comes around eventually.

I agree with returning the $15. Being a former teller, it is hard when your cash count is out at the end of the day. The bank I worked at allowed us to be over or short within $10 every day. If it was more than that, it goes on your record. I always appreciated it when customers were honest and returned cash. It is different if you find money on the street, but to knowingly take advantage of an overworked, definitley underpaid individual is just not right. Also, by returning the cash, it provides a positive situation to become friends with the teller. Perfect chance for you establish a bond with the tellers and then you can tell them you collect coins and if they see anything odd, to save them for you. In my opinion, this will be your reward for doing the right thing, believe me it works!

Having my wife work in this field for so long, the teller hopefully went through her/his rolls and found the mistake which means your account will be affected by it as well. Go back and make things right, by doing the right thing they will remember you and will most likely start putting things aside for you.
