Before you read below, I want to emphasize that the results shown below are the result of a recount. Because I count through thousands of pennies a week, I am bound to make some errors. Thus, I need to do an official recount every so often to correct those errors. With that said, below are the totals, including another $50 that I searched through today. Thanks for the support. WE'RE OFFICIALLY 1/4 OF THE WAY THERESo far: 246,950 pennies searched through To go: 753,050 Finds United States coinageTotal Wheat Cents: 1080 (14) 50's pennies: 586 (7) 40's pennies: 388 (7) 30's pennies: 58 20's pennies: 31 10's pennies: 15 09 pennies: 2 Indian Head cents: 4 (1896, 1897, 1901, 1905) Proof Cents: 2 (1979-S, 1990-S) Philadelphia mint proof token: 1 (no date on it even though it's uncirculated) Foreign Coins Canadian 1 cent: 688 (1) total Post 1965: 605 Young Head (1953-1964): 64 King George VI type II (1948-1952): 6 Kinge George VI type I (1937-1947): 12 (oldest: 1939) 2 Euro: 2 Bermuda 1 cent: 2 ½ New Penny: 1 1 New Penny: 1 Un Centismo de Balboa: 6 Commonwealth of the Bahamas-one cent: 3 10 francs: 1 10 centavos: 1 1 Chinese Jiao: 1 Belize 1 cent: 1 South Africa 1 cent: 1 Unknown Game token: 1 Dimes Roosevelt: 27 (1)

I forgot to add the 5,000 pennies I already looked through to the "pennies searched through" totals. Here are the corrected totals. Another $100 down and 32 more wheats found. Though I would wish for more wheats, we found a score of early dates, including 1911, 1923-S, and 1927, so I can't complain! I'm about to go pick up another $125 in pennies, so stay tuned! Scott, do you have any idea what particular year and mintmark you're coming across the most in term of wheats? I got a huge container of pennies from my great-grandmother a few years ago and with the date/mintmark count job being about halfway done, the most common is 1956-D.
This thread is amazing by the way!

Hi DiscoLover82! Thanks so much for the support. I would say the the most commonly found coin for me is probably the 1956-D as well, though I do find an awful lot of 1941-P's. Your grandmothers penny jar sounds like a very interesting project. What's the most interesting thing you've found so far?

I've found a lot of 1941-P's as well, though it seems like in general there are more from Denver and very few from San Francisco, especially beginning about 1945. Most of them are from the 40s and 50s; there are a few from the 30s but only a handful from before then. There was one 1909 though if I recall correctly.
It also helps that the whole time period from about 1890-1950 is so interesting to me personally too!

This is a interesting project. At this point, wheat cents are being found at about a 0.4% rate, which is higher than I would have estimated.

Sorry for the delay, but I'm back! Another $75 in pennies searched and 26 more wheats found. Satisfied with this hunt but defenitley not happy. I'm going on a school service trip, so I unfortunately won't be able to do any hunting this weekend. I will, however, make sure to get back to the hunt next week. Stay tuned and thanks for the support! Totals below as always. So far: 269,450 pennies searched through To go: 730,550 Finds United States coinageTotal Wheat Cents: 1138 (26) 50's pennies: 612 (13) 40's pennies: 411 (10) 30's pennies: 64 (3) 20's pennies: 33 10's pennies: 16 09 pennies: 2 Indian Head cents: 4 (1896, 1897, 1901, 1905) Proof Cents: 2 (1979-S, 1990-S) Philadelphia mint proof token: 1 (no date on it even though it's uncirculated) Foreign Coins Canadian 1 cent: 707 (7) total Post 1965: 632 (7) Young Head (1953-1964): 65 King George VI type II (1948-1952): 6 Kinge George VI type I (1937-1947): 12 (oldest: 1939) 2 Euro: 2 Bermuda 1 cent: 2 ½ New Penny: 1 1 New Penny: 1 Un Centismo de Balboa: 7 (1) Commonwealth of the Bahamas-one cent: 3 10 francs: 1 10 centavos: 1 1 Chinese Jiao: 1 Belize 1 cent: 1 South Africa 1 cent: 1 Unknown Game token: 1 Dimes Roosevelt: 27 (1)
