I've got a few fake pound coins. At one time they were turning up in people's change every day. Really annoying cos slot machines didn't like them! I'll put pictures up later. I remember a newspaper story about how one of the suppliers was busted - the workshop unit they'd rented made so much noise 24/7 a local resident complained!

Hiya. Yes you're right Dearborn, but any press is pretty loud at the best of times, and as far as I remember they were on an industrial estate. However, health and safety got them in the end even though it was other people's! So here are my offerings... The nice looking ones heads and tails don't line up properly and they've used the wrong effigy of Her Maj despite the fact that it says COPY up the back of her neck... And as for the other one well, what were they thinking? Any nickel brass finish has altogether gone. I think they're fun but I was a pound out of pocket for each of them...

Hiya Red. Just looked at your counterfeits database. I've got a little pile of these so I thought I might just do a list of them, post them here, and if you want to add them to your database feel free. You may well have most of them anyway but one never knows. Have fun!

Hiya. Got down a bit of a rabbit hole with my £1 coins there! I'll post pics of some of them cos they all have certain details that give the forger's game away. Thought I'd start off with this 50p though. I have it on good authority that it's not in fact counterfeit. It escaped into circulation having suffered from the dies being contaminated with oil... Some counterfeits do look a bit like this but it's probably due to the quality of the strike.

Here's a pic of a real 1997 pound coin and a fake one. Admittedly the real one has had less circulation but look at Her Majesty's hair and profile, also how the legend just fizzles out! And it looks like the engraver just gave up with the three lions on the reverse! The fake is 0.1 gram lighter than the real one, and 0.08 mm smaller. You'll have to take my word for how faint the edge inscription is, but if I was a harassed shop sssistant I wouldn't be able to tell the difference... Im having fun now, so maybe a few more tomorrow...
