Came across this in change. Is this contamination of the die? Something else?

It may be a Grease Filled Die. Some grease or other substance filled in the last number of the date when the coin was struck. You can still see it, but it's lighter than the other numbers.

Slightly Struck Through Grease. Not worth a premium, since it's too minor, but go ahead and keep it if you'd like. No harm keeping it as an educational piece, until you find a better example.
