All I can tell is it has an S mint mark. anyone see anything else, type 1/ 2 or anything at all?   |

Three stars under eagle on reverse, date in high relief, so type 2.a (late 1917-1924) - 1917, 1918, 1920, 1923, 1924 are possibilities.

Hah, thanks. Darn internet... I tried for while to count the stars on the sides, because the guide I found failed to mention the stars under the eagle.
Even if its like a 23s . lost cause... oh well :)

The metal underneath the raised parts of the original design are less compressed by the die. That includes the date.
Ultra violet or polarized* light may? help.
* Use polarizing sunglasses in strong sunlight.

I can try the polarize this weekend.
What I did so far..
took the scans & tried to image process, contour, negative image, emboss from various angles, shade from various light positions, and I also tried to do a rubbing of it with a very soft crayon.
its pretty darn smooth!

Light tricks did not work either. I gave in and did the destructive vinegar treatment, for just long enough to bring it out. It appears to be an uncommonish 1918 S, so I will now protect it as best as I can in spite of its awful state. I suppose its a PO(1-3) grade.

Got a better cam for my b-day, and now the 18 isn't looking as 18ish.  Back to not really sure. I have a ways to go on taking pics, but I did finally find an uncompressed capable capture. |
