I am new to the forum. I am not really new to collecting coins but new to actually checking out what I have. I usually just keep back silver coins as well as older pennies out of my pocket change. A while back I came across an odd looking penny and thought I would find out more about it. I'm assuming that this coin must not have been coated with copper? Has anyone seen one like this? Is it a normal occurance? I will post a picture of the front and back.

Thanks for any help.

Your Lincoln Cent looks heavily corroded in the photos you posted. It's hard to tell for sure without better photos. Cropping your photos down quite a bit should allow you to post a larger photo of the coin.

We can't offer certain opinions with those photos I'm afraid.

On Youtube there are videos where they add zinc to a zinc cent. That is what you are seeing . If it were unplated, they the surface would be smooth like the top coin in this image:

IF the coin is MS or AU and still shows mint luster, you can tell whether it was a non plated planchet. Once the mint luster is lost, through wear, corrosion etc it become impossible to tell if the coin was originally from a non-plated planchet or if the copper plating was removed later post strike. So your coin CAN'T be determined to be a non-plated planchet and must be assumed to be altered or just corroded.

Possibly the weight will be a tad over if something was added to it. (2.5 grams normal) If it found in acid circumstances, then the weight could be under.

But with the tolerance range the mint has the weight could still very well be within tolerance unless they were excessively heavy handed with plating, or left in the acid for a LONG time.

Hey there! I also have this penny! Nothing else is not worn down, so it's interesting. it weighs 2.5/2.6 & is bigger, like a nickel size.

to the CCF

Have requested a mod move this to it's own thread
Always post a photo of both sides of the coin when making inquires.
From what you say, it sounds like a Texas Cent but pictures should confirm.
