Today at a depth of nearly 5 inches I unearthed this coin next to an 1850's home on a harbor which first saw colonial settlement in the mid-1600's. This area of eastern Long Island has already produced for me a 1775 Spanish One Real and a Chinese coin from the 1700's. In the field I thought the one side said "COPY" so I was let down thinking it was a child's toy, maybe an old one. Looking closer I think it says "OOPY." If this thing is a fake it sure looks real and all of the other factors lined up for it being real. What do you think?

As to the age, the Hobby Protection Act (which required that COPY be clearly marked) was signed into law in 1973. My guess is that this piece dates to after then.

That is a bummer to be sure.

The surface texture (to my eye, at least), does not suggest long term ground burial.

Fake King Phillip Reals. What makes it an even greater mind-bending tease for me is that I found this real 1775 Spanish One Real a couple months back not far away.

Neat find! I metal detect every chance available. I understand the heart thump followed by the let down! It is exhilarating to find something special. It is why we keep hunting :)
