I have never seen this happen, where all the letters look like they were poured on instead of stamped on. Even the wheat is melted together. Would grease do this?

It's the result of heavy polishing, replating post-mint or both.

It's a spender in my opinion.

I've run across cents like this a number of times over the years--most have the appearance of devices (letters and numbers in particular) being somewhat flattened; made a bit soft and widened. Softened and widened is the key. In all cases that I've seen, rims have not been excessively worn.

Drop it in a 2x2 as an interesting example of post-mint wear.
Rest in Peace

I would say a combination of wear and VLDS .

I'd also say, result of heavy wear, VLDS ans polishing.

I posted a 1944 D very similar to your coin a few days ago. I just took the advice of Jonh1 as a Dryer Coin. I put mine in a 2x2 though as it's interesting to look at.
