Just DDD and damage. Most old nickels will show this type of lettering due to extreme Die Deterioration.

Ok @quarterhoarder72 thank you. I got a question does the mint mark fill in as the die deteriorates?

The filling of the mintmark is related to Die Deterioration. It is caused by a broken post on the die and that results in the die chip seen on the coin. It's not uncommon.

Question away, Curveball, that's what it's all about. What you're seeing on the W is a contact mark, i.e. damage. Similar to the mark in the middle of the E next to it, but the E is damaged in a way that doesn't look like doubling.

Also the most on the center of the mintmark has broken off on this coin. The post forms the center of the mintmark to create the void on the cent. When the post breaks off, then the center of the mintmark looks filled. But it is not filled, it is just a void on the die that didn't form the center of the mintmark. uploaded/coop/1979-D_1983_broken_post_on_mint_mark_AMD_J4337_CCF_AAA.jpgp.img]

I got y'all once the post breaks the die can't make the depression so it just kinda fills up the mint mark. So basically the die is done at that point. Thanks again!!

Once that pin breaks off and they continue to run the die with filled mint marks that's really an error and poor quality on the mints part right? Just saying

Last question on this coin if on the bottom right of the w in we is a contact mark which it could very well could be my question is why is there notching on the letters of GOD and W. I 'll post each one is that from dd or MD or can't be contact marks the tops of the w have notching with the line to the right side of the letter notice the notching at the start of G look at the O here the D notching inside loop it's not flat last the top right corners of the W notching it some what resembles some sort of doubling thats what I keep seeing the notching maybe Heavy DDD with die flow lines

The reversed images are showing off the Machine Doubling. Jefferson's even got some on his upper lip.

You know the die was really in bad shape when the MD is the smoothest looking areas on the devices. The die flow on the fields is so strong, it is worse than a seniors skin looks like.
