1895 - Indian Head cent (Snow S-2 RPD) The distinctive closed 9 and clear repunching visible inside of the lower loop of the 5 make this a "naked eye" Snow variety and a scarcer one at that. 1895 - Canada - Large Cent Another interesting variety. Note the obverse die cracks and retained die chips, so this is a very late die state. Unlike US Large Cents, with the exception of Dr. Haxby's comprehensive study of the many die varieties of 1859, many of Canada's Large Cent dates have had comparatively little research done on die pairings and die states, so there are lots of neat coins out there if you keep your eyes open. Best 99 cents I ever spent (so far.) 1895 - Argentina - Medal to commemorate a school visit or "patriotic excursion" to San Lorenzo, site of Gen. Jose de San Martín's famous victory in the Battle of San Lorenzo during the Argentine War for Independence early in February 1813. 1895 (dated 26 May) Argentine Patriotic Excursion Medal Copper, 22.7 grams, 37mm, thick plain edge Red-brown, very lustrous AU, especially the rev. Reference: Burzio 158 Obv: * Excursion patriotica escolar a San Lorenzo * 26 de Mayo de 1895 / Uniformed bust of Jose de San Martín facing right, "ORZALI B. Y. C." (i.e. Ignacio Orzali, Jose Bellagamba & Constante Rossi) beneath the right shoulder. Rev: (left) Gobierno de Dn. And my last entry for 1895 is this decent but rim damaged fathing of the UK  The coin is another darkened planchet and like what NumisRob suggested probably to avoid confusion with Half sovereigns (Farthings were 20mm and Half Sovs 19.5mm). 1895 was the first year of the Old Head coinage on the Bronze coins, as previously the bun head from 1860 was used, but this even based on an 1838 portrait of the Queen. The Obverse was also upgraded with thinner and more imperial lettering, sharper design and a high but thin rim. I will not be showing many of the previous 1860 - 1894 bronze as the low rim design ennured most of it, just wore out very quickly. Unless you buy specialised coins, most of the Bronze of this era is worn flat or almost so, but at least the dates were slightly recessed and many of us have round bronze planchets with just "1863" visible or even "1891". |
