I have a few coins for 1889 and did my 1880s photos today. My collection is really thinning out now, so I have decided to show all my worn pennies in the 1880s - apologies in advance. First my 1889 Half crown and this is the crown on the reverse touching the rim.  Again an honestly worn coin, but not too bad - I must warn you my 1888 coin is pretty worn. This would be in the VG to Fine range. Pepactonius love your coins for this year, interesting to see the enamelled one, for some reason Enallemed coins of the Jubilee era are more common than other parts of the Queen's reign and its mostly Half Crowns and the Shillings and sixpences as they have the elaborate shield designs. In fact the Jubilee shield designs on those coins are quite similar to the ones used on the late Georgian coins (1816 - 1837). Edited by Princetane

1889 Japan introduced a nickel 5 sen coin. Slightly smaller than a US nickel, but similar in metal and concept.  The coin is dated Year 22 Meiji which equates to 1889 and was issued in the time of the reforming emperor Meiji (1868 - 1913). He has another name, but sadly a 4 letter word can be found in that name - so can't write it. The coin has the year at top of the symbol for 5, you see a small 2 and two horizontal lines twice (2 x 10 = 20 + 2 x 1 = 2 = 22 Year 22 since 1868 which was Year 1). This format of nickel did not last long and 5 sen soon became a smaller coin, then copper and finally clay by 1944. Edited by Princetane

I won't post one today, but here's a selection from Britain: Penny:   Small head shilling - type of 1888, quite a scarce coin:  Large Head shilling - type of 1890. I don't know why the Mint changed the size of the portrait on the shilling. I don't think it made the coin look any better. My 1889 large head shilling was a detector find on a village recreation ground, hence the scuffing... I love your crowns as always NumisRob. I had a double florin in my first collection (Remember buying it for my 17th birthday - but alas it is one of the ones stolen in 2001). I remember it was VF and was 1889 and had the Roman 1. And here is my first incredibly worn penny, that makes the other 2 1889 pennies shown look like Double eagles or gleaming Morgan dollars!  This is honestly what happens to a coin when it circulates non stop from 1889 to 1969! I had to wipe them with water just to get a photo.  |
