Stunning pieces - Loved both of your florins and the British one is the best I have seen from that era.
I also have one of those dinky little Portuguese 50 Reis coins, except mine is worn and 25 years older.

The year 1888 was famous for the Whitechapel murders of Jack the Ripper - to this day, these crimes were never solved, but lead suspects are Walter Sickert an atist, Prince Clarence of the United Kingdom and a Jewish shoket along with a distinguished surgeon. I have 3 coins for the year - all are extremely worn and a direct contrast to the parade of gleaming gold and Morgans we are seeing from the Well off members - my coins reflect my proud Working class background.  My 1888 Halfcrown which is probably my most worn out of the whole collection. This coin would garde between aGood and Good which puts it above lowball - but probably lowmidball  This is an honest coin, that saw probably non stop use from 1888 to at least 1920 when the coins were debased and given it was so worn it may have been well used after 1920. |

A new 'old' denomination today from the UK - the last-ever groat. The fourpenny piece was one of England's first coins, introduced in the 14th century. It declined in popularity during the reign of Elizabeth I when threepences and sixpences became much more widely used. By the early 19th century it had morphed into the Maundy fourpence, issued only for ceremonial purposes. It was a Scottish Member of Parliament, Joseph Hume, who agitated for the coin's revival in the 1830s, and the coin was therefore nicknamed the 'Joey'. Groats for circulation had a seated Britannia reverse rather than the crowned '4' of the Maundy fourpence. Not especially popular, the denomination was last minted for homeland use in 1855, but a final issue was struck in 1888 for use in the colony of British Guiana, where the coin circulated alongside its Dutch equivalent, the quarter guilder. Subsequently, distinct British Guyana groats were struck from 1891 to 1945. 1888 groat:  1888 double-florin:  1888 Crown (narrow date variety):   The 1888 crown is the scarcest of all the Jubilee Head crowns, with a mintage of 132,000. Most have a narrower date than the other crowns of 1887-92. The 1888 wide date crowns are very scarce. |

Beautiful crown again! And loved the tale about the groat - I thought there was something strange about 19th century ones (I have a very worn 1843 one). Completely different and was originally posted for 5 minutes 3 days back - here it is again and back for good. A big salaam to.......  The 5 Kurus of Ottoman Turkey, now noticed it is year 13 (Tiny notch means its a 3 not a 2) of Abdul Hamid's reign AH 1293 = 13 - 1 = AH 1305 = 1888/89. 5 kurus was about 11 pence and the Turkish pound was flated at 1.1 Turkish pounds to a Pound sterling until 1913. An interesting historic coin from the realm of the great Turk. |
