I can tell you for certain that there's no P there, its just a filled D mintmark, which is very common.

Send it in to a TPG. A D over P mintmark on a 1977 dime would be so rare that when you go to sell it the price would be astronomical. |

I still just see a damaged/ filled D. Its literally impossible for it to be a P, because the mint didn't create any coins with P mint marks at the time and there is no way for one to have stuck the die used for this coin.

I'm sorry I'm using my cell for pics until my camera gets here. But I have diamond 10x eye piece and you can clearly see it. Can you guy see it in the last pic I put up? That's the best I can do at the moment

Ok so I took this one to show you there is something in fact behind the d. If your looking at the coin it's on the left side. Well I hope this helps. Thank you guys for your comments and advice

No, just a D. Die chip causing the D to be filled but still just a D.

Impossible (or virtually impossible) since Philadelphia dimes weren't given a P mintmark that year and just had no mintmark instead to differentiate from Denver coins.

@djrob Philly did not put a mintmark on those early year dimes,there were no P punches made to punch the mintmark in the dies...Sorry buddy, you do have a filled in D though.... If you want more confirmation go on the Coin Q&A on Thursday nights on Paula Bluhm you tube channel.. There is a panel of pro's on there that give great advice....

But how common is this? (Certainly not worth sending it in to be graded/attributed) The reason that the mintmark is filled in is from a broken post that on the die, that forms the metal to have the center void on the mintmark.  This happens on all closed devices when the post breaks off the die.  If it breaks off below the fields, then there will be a raised area above the device. Hope this helps.  |
