Notgeldan - or others, Can you explain the terms serienscheine, reutergeld, kleingeldersatz please? I see them but don't know what they mean. And is there a term for the large denomination City/Company notes before August 1922? I have looked for a catalog without finding anything. Thanks!

Hi @joewobblie Notgeld are catalogued by their notgeld category. Kleingeld are small value, less than 1mark (pfennigs) Grossgeld are large values, 1mark and over. Notgeld of 1914/15 - early issues at the beginning of WWI Verkehrsausgaben - small valued pieces intended for circulation and to help with the problem of a shortage of small change. Grossgeld 1918-1921 - pieces tend to have face values like 5 + 10 + 20 marks because of the increasing Inflation.....but not hyper Inflation yet. Serienscheine - sets or series, predominantly issued for the collectors of 1921. 'Reutergeld' are a subset of serienscheine, issued to commemorate Fritz Reuter. There are 70 sets of 3 (210 different notes) Inflation 1922 Inflation 1923 Wertbestaendige - stable valued notes linked to gold / US dollar / commodities. Kriegsgefangenenlagergeld (KGL/POW) prisoner of war camp money. Each different notgeld category has its own catalogue(s). Does that answer your concerns? This is just the basic info. Notes issued by companies, clubs and breweries etc are 'private' issues. Most notes were issued by local councils and authorities so they are not private issues.

Notgeldman - one more question - what is the difference between the nolgeld found in Volumes/Bands 1 & 2 and those found in 5 & 6? The dates overlap - it is confusing and I have been at this a while I own 1 & 2 but not 5 & 6. Finding any of these catalogs in the US is hard and expensive. Thanks in advance!

Grabowski Band 1 & 2 cover the serienscheine pieces. But these catalogues are only covering the basic types. For Americans and everyone else, the best serienscheine catalogue with full coloured pictures is now Nate's one: https://notgeldbook.com/products/no...es-1918-1922If you purchase this fantastic notgeld catalogue, from a good old American, please mention my name (TG-M) to him!! Band 5 & 6 cover the verkehrsausgaben issues, intended for use (unlike the serienscheine). Get a few pieces from each category and then you soon see the differences.
