Haha, thanks for the good luck as well. That's going to have to wait until I actually get a metal detector. I estimate it's going to take about 2-4 months to save up for one right now.

Plenty of second hand detectors around Gil that's if you want to take a chance, I can't steer you to a good one but if you read the threads you will get an idea which one's are good for you, as for me I've used a few other brands but now I'm a one eyed Minelab supporter I swing a GP5000 with a 14" elliptical mono coil by Coiltek for me this is a good combination, don't get me wrong I feel there the best for the Aussie conditions (very mineralised ground )and all the gold you see in this thread was found by Minelab detectors. Anyway I'll leave you with these parting words swing low and slow and be safe.

I've heard a lot of good things about a Minelab. I've also heard that they're difficult for a beginner to use as well. Of course that's something to think about, as far as the soil is concerned, if it's heavily mineralized or not.
I will remember the quote by you and I will "swing low and slow and be safe". Haha

Only the higher market Minelab detectors take some time to get to know them or to drive them to there full potential,
the lower market machines are made with factory settings all ready to go and as I said it's up to you which one suits you best,
If your still scratching you head trying to find a good detector ask BiggFredd he will steer you in the right direction.
Also just a few hints remember when your swinging the coil keep it flat on the grass and rotate your swing from side to side overlapping your last swing this is why they have skid plates on the bottom of the coil so you can skid the coil on the grass this gives you better depth or penetration and the skid plates are replaceable,
in other words don't hold your coil a few inches above the ground even 1 inch above the ground you will loose deep targets,
and this is why I leave you with these parting words
swing low and slow and be safe
regards Harry

I sold the gold in the last photo's along with the fine dust total came to 86gr, the buyer gave me gold value in Aussie dollars less 20% and then discounted the fine gold which is usually more pure than nuggets , anyway it paid a few of my bills electricity, water and my 4X4 truck insurance + council rates with a bit left over for a few bottle of JD . cheers
