Is there really that much gold just lying around? The only valuable natural resource where I live is nonmetallic (oil, of course)...

To start with that's bad luck there's no gold in your locality but don't forget I have a 4 hour drive to get on to gold here in my state and a 10 hour drive to get on to better gold in Victoria and yes nalaberong you have to do the homework and walk the hard yards in the Aussie bush to find it and yes it's still out there either laying on the surface or a few cm (inches)under the ground a 177 ounce nugget was found in Ballarat (Victorias Golden triangle) on the 16th of January 2013.
don't forget to swing low and slow and be safe
happy hunting

Sure beats looking for corroded coins, metal buttons, belt buckles and musket balls!

G'Day Sel and before you say that have a look at the bottom of page 19 in this thread (what's not there is a muscat ball as big as a pigeons egg),this is as you know all part and parcel of metal detecting in the Aussie bush and also as you know it's like they had world war 3 and didn't say anything to anyone

I'm working In the lab at work as I type so I'm going to be short with this entry,I've just heard that BiggFredd has passed away which was a bit of a shock to me also it must have been not long after his last entry on this thread,he will be missed as he brought a bit of humor to my long and boring ramble about Aussie gold,I just hope he's at peace and the big fella's looking after him.
Cheers BiggFredd

P.S. the discoloration on the nuggets for those that don't know is a coating of Ironstone,
