I found several rolls at the bank that have a die clash next to the Monticello building on the reverse
Let me know what you think, I think it is a die clash or maybe a grease strike through.

Does anyone know if this error has been discovered yet? And if not how would I go about documenting the discovery

Looks like a Pre-Die Chip depression. Kinda common on the Jefferson nickels.

I have 5 rolls and they all have the same mark but it's a little different on each coin

@moose have you tried looking at an overlay to confirm if the that area next to Monticello matches up with any design detail on the obv? That could help show why this isn't a die clash.

Spence could you expand on that idea? I looked at the front of the coins and there is no anomaly on the obverse

Yes sure, although @coop has a really nice graphic of this. While we wait for him to post it...

You likely know that a die clash results from the two sides of the die coming into contact with each other, for example if the press is activated, but no planchet is in between the two sides. In that case, part of the design from both sides will transfer over to the other. The damage to the dies can be polished away, especially if the damage is light, but coins struck from thereon out will have some aspects of the opposite side on them. In this case, when you like up the overlay, you will see that there are no details from the reverse that line up with that region next to Monticello. Virtually always that means you don't have a die clash.

This mark lines up with Jefferson's hair behind his ear

His hair does line up there for a clash, but I have also seen many die chips in this location.

The die may have been dropped and distorted the fields. Where if the coin shows raised areas, they were pushed in on the die. Where the area is incuse on the coin, it was part of a wave that the drop and made a higher spot on the die. (incuse on the coin) It may have had another die dropped on this die. When dropped to the floor and damages the outside edge of the die it will look like a Cud, but is not raised above the rim.

So I feel the die was damaged, causing the issues we see on this coin.
