Seems like something that someone working at Stacks would need to say.

Nothing needs to be said, the coin and auction speaks for itself. This sold for a record breaking price by nearly 4x for any NE issued piece. Colonials have their own market.

Say what you please.

Yet you continue to tout how great this result is...

People who really believe that "nothing needs to be said" tend to say nothing and let the results speak for themselves. Not exactly what is happening here. "The lady doth protest too much, methinks"

If I were the seller of this coin I would be disappointed with these results. Like the auctioneer kept repeating, this is a once-in-a-generation event. The presentation at the sale didn't reflect that at all. At this point, I think it is clear that prices realized at StacksBowers lag results at Heritage and GC. I am happy to be a buyer at SB and a seller Heritage and GC. I will never forget how I was talked down to at certain auction houses in the past. Seems like they're still training staff that way at SB in this day and age.

It was a little odd that this was sold in the course of much more mundane objects that sold for as little as $500. Maybe featuring it in a rarities only sale would have been more appropriate.
I was surprised at that as well! Tons of trinkets (medallions, badges, casting molds...) with three-digit prices in there.

The high-grade NE shilling just before it sold pretty quickly too, which does suggest some market depression from the unusual placement. I'm sure that with a better presentation this could have easily been an eight-figure sale.

(I feel like it could easily have doubled the price if presented with the original holder, as well - what did happen to that?)

I do think that the website of SB is rather clunky compared to that of HA and GC.

I think whomever purchased this coin for $2.1m + the nut is going to be able to realize a very nice return on their investment if they were to sell it again in a decade or two.

I'm honestly quite surprised that it went for less than $3.5m.

After all, if you want an 1804 Dollar or a 1913 V nickel (long considered among the most famous numismatic rarities) there are more examples in existence than there are of this little NE coin.

As I mentioned previously, the colonial marketplace has lost a few of the big gun collectors in the past few years, if Sydney F. Martin, Donald G. Partrick, or Robert Martin, were still around and if Christopher Salmon was still building his set of New England silver (he sold his March 2023) we might have seen a real battle doubling the price it ended up at. So who purchased it? Deloy Hansen perhaps? Maybe Ian Russell of Great Collections or the Tyrant, tech billionaire Dan O'Dowd?

I believe John Kraljevich was the "John" being referred to during the auction by auctioneer Ben Orooji, though it could have also been John Pack (Stack's executive consignment director), John was manning the phone with the eventual winning bidder from what I could tell over the video feed. I got lucky to be able to watch it as I checked as soon as I went to lunch and they were only 3 lots away from the 3 pence. It was so neat to be able to watch it live from my phone, technology sure has changed how we attend and view coin auctions today.

I received an email from Larsjan a couple of weeks ago and was able to help him with some scans of various articles and blurbs about this auction and coin for posterity. I hope he is pleased with the journey he took with the coin and it's eventual passing to a new owner.

Also congratulations to the winner of the CCF contest; nickrulercreator (a new member with only 44 posts) - he was only $23,000 away from the correct price, something good in the water in Boulder, Co (I worked there at a coin store at one point in my life), and of course a huge thanks to GMS4 for hosting the contest and giving away 2 Canadian silver Maple Leaf coins. Good on both of you, thanks for making a fun event of this.

I've been following and involved in this saga since the beginning 4½ years ago. I've been occupied with other things than coins for a while, and had forgotten about this, until last night when the news of the sale popped up on my newsfeed! I was elated, and spent an hour last night, and another hour today on here catching up on what I had missed (about 25 pages).

I, like many others, hope it does indeed end up in a museum. I would very much like to be able to see it in person some day, and know that I was - even in a miniscule way - involved in this story! What an incredible ride this has been!

Absolute congratulations to larsjan!
