No, the date is raised so it wears off, very common. If you want to try and restore it, try this....

As Bobby says - no. It's quite common to find a well circulated Buffalo nickel without a date.

If you wanna save some money you can "restore" the date by soaking the coin in vinegar. It takes longer, but it works. Plenty of dateless nickel topics here on the forum mention the process.

I release dateless Buffalo nickels into the wild periodically, kind of to spark some interest In this fun hobby. As stated above, the date is on a raised platform, causing the date to be the first thing to go. I still have several dozen left, waiting their turn.

The thing is here that on these Nickels the date was not recessed below the rim and therefore was one of the first thing to wear down. Notice on the reverse the 'Five Cents' was lower than the rim and was not worn off completely, just was starting to wear as the rim word down with it.
