@mrt, first welcome to CCF. Second, it looks to me like the 7 is always about this length. Have you tried comparing this coin to another '87?

After looking at a few more pics of 1987 pennies it appears to be normal. Too sleepy to think. :)

I think the color/shading change at the bottom makes it longer than it is.
