Back in late November/early December, I had my 2019-S ERP ASE sent for grading to NGC. When I got it back in the mail, I noticed there a very tiny piece of debris (some speck that looks like dust or fuzz) on the white holder near the top of the obverse (it's not on the coin itself, but pretty close). I emailed them shortly after receiving it and got a response around Christmas basically saying bring it to their booth at the Central States Numismatic Society Coin Convention (I asked if this was possible and to also get the coin back during the show to avoid dealing with the mail, but they said they weren't holdering so I could only give it to them and get it mailed back). Well with COVID-19 cancelling the show, I'm going to have to submit the coin myself by mail if I don't want to wait indefinitely for the next local show they may be at. Today I went to look at it, and I now notice there is a small hairline crack on the right side on the side interior of the holder (I can't feel it when I run my finger along the right edge, so it's inside) which is giving me more urgency to send it back to have it replaced. I sent them an email today, but was wondering how easy it is to get them to eat the costs of re-holdering and sending it back (since this was on issue on their end). I have no issue with covering the cost to mail it to them, but I'm not sure how much they're going to fight me on the cost since they may argue the spec is only a cosmetic thing (since it's not on the coin) and I didn't bring the crack up sooner (I didn't notice until now and this has been laying on a flat velvet surfaced drawer since I got it back).

If you can convince them that the current holder isn't perfect due to their causes, I feel sure that they would be happy to re holder it again at their expense. Return shipping fees would be at your expense.

Quote: Return shipping fees would be at your expense. That's what's gonna irk me. I'm about to pay 2x what I paid to have it graded since the grading fee will be the cheapest aspect deducted. I may as well try to find other coins to send it (maybe my 2019 W National Memorial Quarter). Here is the speck mark: Here is the crack: And a couple glamour shots for those that asked:

You're as bad as I am. But when it is somebody else that is fussy like me, I think . . . "Oh jeeze, that's no big deal". So, I think it's OK as it is. That beautiful coin in there should distract you enough to not really notice it.

I would just let it be. But to me, those are really minor. Worry about the coin not the slab.

Well I asked them and they sent a shipping label to send it back to them and they'll fix it. Good on them! I would've left it alone in terms of mailing it (and just waited for them to come to a local show) if it was just the speck, but I'm more worried about the crack on the side becoming a problem later (i.e. Toning, other small debris getting in) and nip it in the bud now than wait and have them ask why I waited so long. Respectfully disagree in that the purpose of the slab is to protect the coin (among other things), if the crack is going to compromise protecting it, I'd rather get it fixed ASAP than risk damage to the coin down the line leaving it in a compromised slab. Is anything going to happen to it overnight? No, but I'd rather ask them now to fix it than wait a year or two and have them be less willing because they'd be curious why I waited so long.

Some people say,you buy the coin and not the slab. I would prefer a nice coin in a nice slab, than a nice coin in a bad slab.

I generally prefer a nice coin in an album.

Looks like they mailed it back today (registered priority). Only thing I had to pay was the shipping fee to mail it back to me (they charged $24.50 instead of the flat $30) which I'm perfectly ok with considering they provided the label to get it there (I was originally planning to give it to them in person when they had a booth at the CSNS convention until COVID threw a monkey wrench into everything). Hopefully the new one has no issues. Hats off to NGC.

Got my coin back today. Looks great! I noticed both ends of the slab are now smooth so I'm wondering if there was damage to the first one that wasn't noticed or happened in transit. They didn't charge my card and I received an automated email with an invoice for the shipping charge. I called NGC to settle up and give them a card number and it turns out they're not charging for the return shipping and the invoice was sent in error. Props to them!
