There are so many varieties of the double dies and 55 was such a famous year that I stumbled across a half roll of 55s and they all seem to have MD. Just wondering what your thoughts are. . .

Looks like some DDD, relating to the last 5 in the date, and a little bit of MD.

It's a Poor Man's Doubled Die. The last 5 on the die shows doubling from polishing the die. The coins are quite common with this doubling

Extreme die wear was common on the 50's wheat cents because the dies were over used. This one is 'So Called' the poor mans doubled die. But it is just extreme die wear. Note the outer edge of the 5? The is from die wear. Also 1953 also had a few like this:

Just the die wearing out. Getting closer to retire after each strike.

Not really. I also noticed a fingerprint above Liberty.

This phenomenon is found particularly often on the 1955 cent.

Actually it is not a die polishing affect on this coin. If it were an over polishing issue, then the devices would have been smaller in size. I'm just not seeing that on your coin, It is more of a die wear issue. The dies were used way past normal retirement. Thus all the strange things happening on these coins from over use of the dies.
