Hello to All! Hope everyone's having a good day today. I just acquired this 1884 S Morgan dollar and I need some assistance on the condition and grade. I find it hard to try to grade out coins that are heavily toned so IDK. Any input is apprecated and thanks I'm advance! *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. *** Edited by WeBeRolling 06/11/2020 09:37 am

The dull, rather evenly toned surfaces makes me think it's been cleaned. Since I don't see any hairline scratches I think it's been dipped. But the lack of sharpness of the images could be masking abrasive cleaning.
If it were to be slabbed I expect it would be graded AU-DETAILS.

Looks counterfeit to me. The date doesn't look right. The 2nd 8 and 4 look much bigger than the 1 and the 1st 8.

It's an AU55-58 for me. Leaning more to AU58.

I'm not certain that it's counterfeit, but I'm leaning that way. The weight has become less important since the Chinese fakes have got that down. Same goes for magnetic properties since they stopped using materials that are attracted to a magnet. The inside of fakes is some sort of brass amalgam that is no longer magnetic. Two things I have found that work pretty well against these new counterfeits. The first is the ring test. You need known genuine Morgan or Peace dollars. On a hard surface, a table will do. Give a real dollar a small spin ..... only enough to make it revolve once or twice. Now listen to the tone as it comes to rest. Do this over and over with a few more known genuine Morgan or Peace dollars. Once that sound is embedded in your brain, do the same with the dollar you suspect as fake. It will sound different ..... duller, and it will be noticeable. Do a real again, listen, then the suspected fake. Unless you're tone deaf, you'll hear the difference. Here's the next check. Lay some real dollars on the table and lay the suspected fake right next to some, touching. A fake will be ever so slightly thicker that you can feel the difference in height. It might be so slight that it's not very visible looking on edge, but you will be able to feel it. Try those and report back.

The details of this coin are mushy and incorrect. This one screams fake.

OP...
What is the source of your coin?
Your coin just does not look right at all. As others mentioned, it has a mushy appearance. To me, the lettering, date and mint mark just don't look "right". The coin has been horrifically cleaned to remove tarnish of some sort.
There is just too many things wrong with this coin to make me think it is nothing but a Chinese counterfeit.
If you want to rest all doubts then send it it for grading/authentication to ANACS. Good luck!

It does look off to me . Do you have return privileges? I am not sure what you paid for it but if you can return it I would probably do that .

Thank you for all the replies! I will be sending back tomorrow I do believe. It does seem to be thicker but not noticeable to the eye, it definitely didn't pass the sound test, sounds totally clad lol. Lesson learned, thanks for all the info and replies! Got a CPL picks of the thickness for educational purposes...the fake Morgan is on the left in both picture, you can see an extra layer of metal when I'm holding them and the real Morgan when laid flat is obviously indented as it should be and the fake is more of a flat not concaved planchet...crazy how.good these things can be.

Agreed with all of the above. Also, spots circled looks raised IMO. Surfaces look off.

Yes has that lifeless look of a counterfeit, and some of the details seem off. Glad you're returning it.
