Hi All, I have always stayed away from new sellers on ebay, untill they reach a feedback of 50+. However I am in a sticky situation I really like somehting that a seller has, however they only have a feedback rating of 9. What are other peoples thoughts? Do you deal with new sellers? Cheers, lars |

Well, IMHO, you gotta start somewhere, you and I did. Even tho it is under 10, if his FB is still 100%, he has to build up his reputation somehow, and that happens by guys like you and me taking a chance. I would not stay away from a under tenner if he has what I want and he delivers as advertised.
My only concern would be, is this guy/gal a legit newcommer, or is this person someone who was booted previuosly and now has a new addy and credit card on file and is looking to start a new scam ID--
Go with your gut feeling and email the dude--If he responds in a timely manner is a plus--

So are you saying the price is what is scaring you away from bidding? or is it his feedback? I have paid for items that were over 4K on ebay, and the transaction went flawlessly--Not knowing what you are looking at makes it difficult for me to see if it is a "value" a "bargain" or "over priced"--300 bucks might be cheap--depends on the item, what your point of view is, what you think it is worth, what is your top offer, and what the actual value (worth) of this item really is--  --If it was easy---hehe  |

Very logical, I must say.
If it was $300 or $4k from a reputable seller (large positive feedback) I wouldn't care as much.
I am just thinking $300 from a seller with feedback of 9 (100%)? That is why I posted this thread to see what others thought, am I just being to careful?
BTW is is a nice 1700's book.

The one and only time I have been ripped on ebay was from a new seller !!! I wanted to give them a break and purchase a few coins from them help them bring up a rating, well they stole my 20.00 bucks with no remorse !!! Never again !! Rick |

Do you buy from a new ebay seller? No. It's easy to get a feedback rating. Just get on ebay and BUY some items. Pay for them promptly and you got a rating. At least that shows that you know how ebay works, what is expected from the buyer as well as the seller. If the seller does have a low rating of 9 and you really want the item, check the items he has sold already and see if they are coins or "Other stuff" he is just getting rid of. Read the 9 feedbacks. Also check what else he is selling at the moment, if this is his only item for sale or he has 20 other coins for sale. Do they have photo's and does he sound like he know what he's talking about. Thieves are greedy, is he asking a lot for postage, did he start the auction at a high first asking price or 99c. Where is he located? I never buy from china, far too risky. Email with a couple questions. Is the seller helpful or does the response if any seem anoyed. How much are you willing to loose on a bad transaction compared to getting the coin from another source? Finally flip a coin, Heads go for it, Tails forget it. Cross you fingers, say a prayer and good luck. |

I have bought from new sellers. I always e-mail them first if they return with a dubious reply I ask to see a scan of their drivers Licence as security. I have only been burnt once buy some one claiming to have a small date 1864 2 Cent which in fact a large date there were no pictures but I paid very little over the retail price of a large date for the coin. The guy took the money, sent the coin then closed his ebay account. It was after that I started asking for proof of residence. |

I have no problem buying from new sellers as long as they accept Paypal. Paypal's buyer protection is very good and most of the time Paypal will find in favor of the buyer in the case of a dispute.
I do not purchase from new sellers who don't accept Paypal. There is too much risk involved.

Some great advice here.
I sent him an email and he gave me a very beliveable answer, even referred to his wife in the email.
I will do some research into his listing today.

End result, my passion for the book out weighed and I did some bidding. I got out bid at the last 3 seconds.....damm dial-up....lol

My first purchase on ebay resulted in an e-mail asking me to contact the seller by phone. After a short chat the seller accepted my bid. So I think it is a two way street! A had a few more inquiries like that then things smoothed out. Some very sound advice has been posted on this thread! Mike  |
