1956 D Penny Position Of Mint Mark?

Why is this mint mark up on the date?

Mint marks were not part of the die and were added at the individual mints by the staff, you will see them all over the place. Those that touch the date are good but really the RPMs and the OMMs are the ones with a premium.

Yup. Placed by hand, locations can vary a bit. Nice example.

Punched into the dies by hand, but in Philadelphia not at the individual mints. In this case the guy punching in the mintmark punched higher than normal. But in general if the mintmark was in the triangular are bounded by the date, the bust, and the rim, it was considered to be OK.

There was a nice one that year though:

But in the later die states the intersection was missing.
