Hello, I'm just trying to figure out how someone can tell the difference between post mint damage and an actual error on old coins?
For example this 1969 quarter I decided to hold on to for this exact reason. If you look under the ear you can see something that at one point could have in my head been a dd but I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the two on an old coin like this.
All I can tell you about it is it's not indented.

If an area on a coin is incused, chances are good that it is PSD, if it is raised, then you might have something. The area around the ear on your last pic is incused or dented in, it is post strike damage.

It is really hard to tell from your photos. Your images are not in focus and contrast is too soft.

You can have metal pushed up from a hit or two. I'd say this is PMD because there is nothing in the minting process that would cause such damage. Again from your photos, it's really hard to see.

Your coin did not leave the mint looking like this.

See, and that is why I asked. On an old coin it's almost impossible for a newbie like myself to tell the difference. Thanks.
