Archraz, do you at least pick out the foreign coins? I would gladly take them off your hands (seriously)

Jedichief, don't berate your story. I'm one who is always interested in reading what other people find stashed away in a family's change jar....and knowing the dates of those coins makes it even a better story (for me).

Badthad - Is it just the fact that it's bright and shiny that shows it's been cleaned or do you see other evidence that I should be looking for? Also, I guess I'm wondering why cleaning is such a bad thing. It sure does make the coin look kind of like new.

Not the best example but still fun to find...and it filled a hole!

I see evidence of wear, down to the VF-EF level. There's no way for a coin to be bright red when it's worn to that level unless it's been cleaned. I can also see marks on the surface indicative of cleaning.

Cleaning is bad because it destroys the coin. Let me ask you this...

You're buying a car and it had some spots on it. So the seller took steel wool to the paint to remove those spots. Would you still want the car or would you rather have lived with a couple spots?

I was just talking on this thread about not finding an Indian yet. Two days later out pops a 1903. Should have said something a long time ago. Now, for a Proof!

Well, not trying to be difficult, but I'd like the car repaired. I don't like car's with spots, rust, dents, etc.

I'm struggling with this in other areas of antiques. Restoring cars is good and encouraged. Refinishing antique wood is verboten. In old guitars you want a beat up Fender. And, there's people that specialize in creating old looking guitars out of new ones. With a Gibson, you want it as pristine as possible and making any and all possible repairs is encouraged. (It makes my head spin)

If I'm faced with a grungy, nasty looking old coin, I'd prefer it be spiffed up. I don't want the metal of the coin to be necessarily disturbed, but I'd like it to be as "show room new looking as modern science allows". I think I'm in the minority on on this one. After taking a much closer look at that 1927 I can see where the metal was scratched/buffed and cleaned, but on my first look I thought it was an UNC that got away from someone. Guess I've got a lot of learnin' to do.

I was at a small local bank doing a refi on my house, they had me sitting in the lobby so I figured....what the heck, I'll ask the teller for a box of cents. She brought out a customer wrapped box, YAY! That's where I found this 98 WAM, also in this box was a lot of 80-90's BU's! Only one Wheat, a 1942 in EF, but I was just happy to grab all those BU's! I must have snagged over 100 BU's for my roll set from that box, some of them were REALLY nice too.

Congrats on the WAM BadThad. They must all be around here as I got $10 worth at a Bank in Meijer on Thursday (12th) and a 1998 WAM came out. The teller said if I found anything worth while, she gets a finders fee. Guess I owe her a cup of coffee, at least.
