shadz - if you are in the mood, you can create a simple scale out of an old AA/AAA battery, popsicle stick, and tape. Use a known copper on one side and run your pile of '82s through it. Copper '82s will bring things to balance while the zinc '82s wont lift the copper cent anchor. Or just use your ear; they make different sounds when you bounce them. Maybe a bit prone to making a mistake that way, but odds are you'd be right the vast majority of the time.

I lack a concrete floor to bounce coins on, everything here is carpeted. You get better results if you drop them from 2m high on a concrete floor. I'm tired of having to bounce them on my table and having the coins come back at me (you have to throw it pretty hard to hear the difference unless when your coin is silver) because it actually hurt. I think the 'tap woh anoher coin' method is more accurate, since you don't have to cancel out the sound it makes when the floor hits coin instead of the coin's 'ring' when it hits the floor.

Quote: shadz - if you are in the mood in the mood very much but no level flat surface to use a balance on. stupid old house! at least I was able to go to my other bank today and they traded me some old filthy dirty pennies in boxes for the 2 boxes of shiny new plastic rolled pennies! i will figure something out or just have one huge pile of 82 and 82d and 4 empty holes in my folders for when the time comes and I have nothing else to do make myself some kind of plumb-bob type scale that works better than the postal scale with a range on it I can read. got too many other yard related projects right now to build anything for coins too after winter storms, just glad I can search 5000 old used and filthy pennies to be able to find at least 1 keeper. (foreign, IHC, wheat, whatever!) also talked to a coinstar guy the other day about those sorters they use in the machines and IF he finds an old one they might replace I might get it form him and be able to just use it for pennies. (for those of interest, feel free to replace every occurrence of penny in this post with cents if you are more comfortable with that. I just type whatever comes out of my fingers at the time.) ok enough of my rambling nonsense 30+ pounds of coins await my sorting! happy weekend all!

Good luck shadz - find something(s) interesting and post back!
Slur - my bounce test is really just a drop test from a few inches (2-3") on to a smooth desk top. Tapping works but I usually have the subject specimen in hand and do a casual drop. Inexpensive letter scales are out there and tag sales will be popping up, so maybe an easy score in hand. I borrow the one here from work once I have a bunch of '82 Ds to sort, so it's about all the investment I need. And more than half the time, I'm able to tell by visual examination which I have in hand.
Happy hunting everyone!

about a dozen wheats (29 ~ 58) on a preliminary search so far, along with about 10 canadian. got all the rolls open so I can re roll as I go while doing the rest. 1963 canadian I think I need and a 2011 canadian as well. haven't dont anything but spot check as I opened them so got the majority of the 100 rolls to do over the weekend. no S yet, but sure there will be at least one when I get to REALLY looking at them.
nothing really special yet but at least I got something to keep out of them! of course I have seen some 2013 already but at least it isn't 5000 of the darned things.

You can pickup a scale on ebay which measures to 1/100 of a gram for $5. A worthwhile purchase in my opinion.

I wish the box ended as good as it started, but there was a drastic drop off in wheaties after roll 8. But, 8 wheats in the first 8 rolls, including nice a nice 1920 and hole filling 1923. In the end, 13 wheaties. good results even though the pace was looking much better after 8 rolls ;-)

3 S (68~74), 7 canadian, 15 wheats, was my total for both boxes. got a very shiny 62 and 74, and what appears to be a spot-free 2006 zincoln. even with a loupe I saw no black spots on it edge or faces. also countless 82 (P&D) to sort through at a later date. still missing that one 2009 D. but about a dozen 2009
so much better than the 4999 2013 and 1 1973 I had originally.
again over 50% of the boxes were 70s because every other coin was either a 70, 82, or 83 up. not sure why I am getting so much copper because I am not one of the people that wants it.

4/13/14 WE results • 2000 cents searched • 10% copper (208); lower than normal (shadz has the copper) • 11 LWCs (a nice 1920, 2 1950S); lower than normal • 15 LMCs (a nice 1968 D in the mix); lower than normal • 2 S Mint LMCs (an AU+ 1968 S); lower than normal, but a nice find! • 18 Foreign (all Canadian again; 1962-2000) Not a great pick, but the 1920 and 1968S are upgrades in one album or another. I also found several LMCs with die cracks and perhaps a 1984 DDO, all of which will require more scrutiny when I find some time. Lower numbers might be the result of fewer coppers to search. I hope everyone had or has a good pick going. Good luck everyone!

Just completed 2 boxes and the pickings were slim. Most keepers came for 1st box. A LOT of coppers in 2nd box, but I don't save them. 6 CAN, 30s, 42d, 44x3, 44s, 46, 46d, 51s, 54s, 53s, 57d, and 58dx2. The one saving grace was a 1960 D/D RPM (confirmed in another forum)

Hey Rackster... you don't find many 1982 LD zincs? While I don't find as many zincs as coppers, the few zincs I do find all tend to be 82 LD. What I can't find are 82D zincs. Especially the small date.

Hi ion - almost a 50/50 split in my rough estimation between copper and zinc 1982 cents. The most elusive is the 1982 D LD zinc. I have only found 1 in the wild here on the East Coast. Everything else is readily available but aside from the 1982 LDs, the 1982 SDs and 1982 D LD coppers are fewer as well (but available in a 2000 cent search). I posted some rough numbers a couple months back if you feel like a Search.
